Unfortunately, lighting is the last thing you think about; but, the first thing you see!
Done right, lighting is invisible. When you are seeing your space, colors, materials, textures and art; when you are able to see well enough to read, cook, groom and choose clothing, the lighting is background to living.
No one builds a house without considering the structure. Lighting is equally important to the planning, budgeting and design of your home. Lights must coordinate with structural and mechanical systems as well as your circulation, furniture and art layout.
Balance your budget to include lighting matching the size (footprint and volume) and quality of finishes you desire. Large rooms, tall ceilings require more sophisticated lighting; it is difficult to see the beautiful granite under glaring, low-power, "apartment" quality lights.
Please do not wait until the house is framed, roof is done, and "electrician starts Wednesday" to call me. I can help you; though, your contractor will certainly be upset by my late introduction and any recommended changes.
Even more unfortunate, "I just completed remodeling my kitchen, and I can't see . . ."
It is never too early to think about lighting.
